Some industry insiders believe that compared with the current mainstream square batteries, large cylindrical batteries have better performance and economy, and will be used in more fields in the future.


Recently, Tesla announced that its 4680 battery team produced 868,000 cells in the past week at its Fremont plant in California, which can be equipped with more than 1,000 electric vehicles. This means that the production capacity of Tesla's 4680 battery has been greatly improved compared with before. Just a few days ago, Yiwei Lithium Energy also released its first generation of sodium-ion batteries, using a new generation of 4695 large cylindrical batteries.


With the improvement of technology, there are more and more fans of large cylindrical batteries. Some industry insiders believe that compared with the current mainstream square batteries, large cylindrical batteries have more outstanding performance and economy, and will be used in more fields in the future.


It is understood that Tesla released the 4680 battery with a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 80 mm in September 2020. Tesla said that compared with the 2170 battery, the single cell energy of the 4680 battery has increased by 5 times, which can increase the vehicle's mileage by 16%. In the future, with the improvement of battery materials and car design, the net increase in cruising range will be 56% and the production cost will be reduced by 54%.


"The company has finally achieved rapid development in the 4680 battery." In Tesla's third quarter 2022 conference call, Tesla CEO Musk has released a signal of expanding the production capacity of 4680 batteries. He also said: "The future goal is to expand the production capacity of 4680 batteries to 1000GWh per year, and the cost can be reduced to US$70/kWh." It is reported that in the first half of 2022, the yield rate of small batches of 4680 batteries produced by Tesla's California factory has reached 92%.


It is reported that the energy density of EVE Energy's new generation 4695 large cylindrical battery reaches 350Wh/kg, which can achieve ultra-fast charging in 9 minutes and a range of 500 to 1,000 kilometers, with a 30% increase in manufacturing efficiency and a 50% reduction in manufacturing costs. Zhao Ruirui, deputy director of EVE Energy's Central Research Institute, said that cylindrical batteries can slow down the performance degradation of sodium-ion batteries, and the overall process is highly compatible with existing lithium battery production lines. EVE Energy recently stated that the company's 46 series large cylindrical battery project is progressing in an orderly manner as planned. According to the plan, EVE Energy's total large cylindrical battery production capacity will exceed 100GWh in 2025.


Recently, Guoxuan High-tech (Gotion) also exhibited two 46 series large cylindrical batteries, 39Ah and 50Ah, for the first time, with an energy density of 310Wh/Kg, marking the arrival of new players in the 46 series large cylindrical battery camp.


It is understood that at present, the cylindrical battery camp has many battery companies such as CATL, EVE Energy, LG Energy Solution, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, Envision Power, BYD Battery, Guoxuan High-tech, and Honeycomb Energy.
